Games I’ve been playing – January 2021

For some reason for me January felt like it was all over the place. Looking at the games I’ve actually played (as opposed to the ones I thought about playing) there wasn’t all that much variation.

I am guessing the sensation comes mostly from real life events which certainly felt like there were quite a few.

To top it all off I have been sick for the last three days. Don’t worry it wasn’t anything serious and I am almost back at 100% health. But it does mean I am starting February with low energy and a lot more introspection than usual.

Anyway, this is what I have been up to during in January, gaming-wise:

Games I’ve been playing – December 2020

Happy New Year!

May 2021 be a better year for all of us. Or at least not get any worse than the previous one. *knocks on wood*

This month Skyrim finally loosened it’s grip on me, so that I could move on to other games. I haven’t finished getting all the achievements for Special Edition yet but I intend to go back to it soon. My plan is to power through the remainder of the Dragonborn main questline (there shouldn’t be much left if memory serves) then work on the other optional achievements.

Once I complete that goal I am definitely done with this save and won’t be playing Skyrim again for a while as I am sated for what this game offered to me.

What I did play this month was a bit all over the place. It would have been more if it wasn’t for Minecraft but I will get to that in a bit. Let’s just go by chronological order. Sort of.

Games I’ve been playing – November 2020

November felt like a pretty unusual month for me. First because I only played a couple of games the entire month. It would even just be one game if FGO didn’t pretty much expect us to login every day. Granted, I tend to play 2 to 3 games each month so this isn’t all that much of a change, it is just that even with this focus, there was a lot of game fatigue but I will get more into that in a bit.

The other unusual thing was that this last weekend and Monday there were a lot of unfortunate incidents, like losing my line phone, my internet and my power twice all in the interval of a few days. It is all fixed now and hopefully it won’t happen again any time soon. *knocks on wood*

If I don’t have anything bad happen in the entirety of December I will be happy. Knowing my luck though, that won’t be the case. But enough whining from me, let’s just get to the point of this post.

Games I’ve been playing – October 2020

I don’t know what was up with this month. It started normally then at some point it is like it went into fast-forward, everything became like a blur and before I knew it the month was over. I guess that goes for this entire year, with some months feeling like they are taking a long time to pass with others feeling like “Wait, the month is over already?”

This kinda end up reflected in the games I played this month too…

If I could only play five games in a year… (2020 version)

Naithin of Time to Loot made a pretty interesting post about a 5 Games Challenge. It is sort of a challenge where he is allowed to play only five games of his choice for a year. If the idea seems curious to you as well then just read his post for all the details.

Initially I thought that if I was in that situation my picks would be pretty easy as there are enough games with good repeatable content that I enjoy and could keep me entertained for a year.

But the more I thought about it the more I realized it was not quite that simple. I have a very fickle mind. What I feel like playing can completely change overnight. Even if I am heavily playing a certain type of game for a week that desire to play it might simply vanish the next day as I feel like playing something different. Extend that for a whole year and I am not sure I could comfortably do it.

Yet for the sake of this mental exercise let me try to pick five games that could last me for a year.

EDIT: This is embarrassing. As Naithin pointed in the comments turns out I already did a post like this last year! With the same title too! XD

Oh, well, for anyone curious on how my list change from the previous year, you can find the post here.

Games I’ve Been Playing – September 2020

A good sign that I am having trouble writing the intro to these posts is when I seriously consider commenting on the weather here. I don’t really feel like doing that so let’s just pretend I wrote something relevant to the month of September here and skip straight to the content, ok?

Games I’ve been playing – August 2020

This has been another month where I played way less than I wanted to due to my mood just being… low, so to speak.

Seriously, brain, what is up with you? We should have been back to normal last month! Why are you still like this?

Random crazy talk aside, I did manage to make a bit of progress in a couple of the games I wanted to play. Not much progress but still better than nothing. Hopefully this month should be a bit better.

But that is enough rambling about that. Here is what I’ve played last month.

Growing up and the media that shaped me

Well, that didn’t take long. I already found a writing prompt from Promptapalooza that I feel compelled to write about. If you don’t know what Promptalooza is, you can find the details of the event here.

The TL,DR version of it is: there will be a writing prompt each day and someone will write about it then link to the next person who will write about a different prompt in the next day. It is kinda like a huge blog crawl during the month of August!

Again, I am not participating in the event in any way or form but I hope nobody will mind if I join in and write something based on a prompt or two.

Anyway, the prompt that spawned this post is one proposed by Mailvatar:

What are some key sources of media (games/movies/etc) that have shaped your worldview?

Please, take the time to read his post too. It is a pretty interesting read.

Games I’ve been playing – July 2020

If in June most of my gaming time was spent modding Skyrim Special Edition then in July most of it was spent testing said mods. I also got a bunch of achievements for the game while at that which was another thing I wanted to do.

Surprisingly enough the game is pretty stable despite the number of mods I have (235, discounting textures and other mods that don’t use an ESP/ESM file). I had only about two or three crashes in all the hours I spent with the game this month which is pretty low for me when it comes to a modded Bethesda game.

Still there were a lot of other games I wish I could have played more in July and this month I will try to be better at it.

Games I’ve been playing – June 2020

I honestly thought I’d be able to finish at least a couple more games this month. But then I got distracted with modding Skyrim (more about it below) and all my plans went downhill.

Oh well, it wasn’t a bad month for gaming either way. I did make some progress in the games I cared the most and got to play a few others with friends. Plus there was the Steam Games Festival, which albeit short, was a nice way to get introduced to a bunch of great new games too.

With all that said, here are some thoughts on the games I’ve played this month:
