Real Neat Blog Award

There has been a questionnaire making the rounds around the blogosphere  in the form of “Real Neat Blog Award”. As usual the rules are pretty simple, you get tagged by someone, answer their 7 questions then make 7 questions of your own and tag 7 other people.

It is all optional though and this time I got tagged by Pizza Maid of PizzaMaid.moe. She also streams some games over at Twitch if you feel like watching something entertaining a couple times a week. 🙂

Alright, time to answer some questions!

How MMORPGS helped me

This is post #4 for Blaugust 2019

Earlier today I saw one of those tweets of “RT this if X has…”. In this case X was Final Fantasy XIV and the rest of the tweet was a small list of things that the game might have helped. I just RTed it because I liked it and then didn’t give it another thought.

Later in the day I saw Belghast, of Tales of Aggronaut, made a whole post based on a similar meme. It was then that I realized I could just have done the same!

Since I have no shame when it comes to stealing ideas for topics here is how MMORPGs helped me in real life:

Challenge is not for me

This is post #2 for Blaugust 2019

There was a post in Dating Sims in the Holodeck about high difficulty in games. The gist of it is that they play games for entertainment and a harder difficult in games gives them opposite sensation. This has been so bad before that they abandoned games before due to a sudden spike in difficulty.

This made me think a bit about the topic, enough that putting everything in a single comment would be too much so time to write it all down here!

Time changes all

A note from Vampire: the Masquerade Bloodlines describing how perception, time and mind are linkedLast night Naitin of Time to Loot suggested the following topic in the “Writing Prompts” section of the Blaugust Discord:

Ways in which you have changed in your gaming preferences, tolerances, needs or wants over time

After reading his post on the topic as well as the two posts that inspired his (one from Baghpuss and the other from Pete) I am not sure mine exactly fit with the prompt but I thought it might be something interesting to write about anyway.

So, let’s give this a try, shall we?

Comfy Questions

List of 26 questions about the person

Since this is a slow week for me in terms of what to talk about I thought I just jump on the bandwagon with this.

I saw it first in the Deez Wurds blog. There is also a post like this on Moderate Peril and on  GamingSF. If I missed anyone else who answered these questions I apologize as I am still catching up on reading blogs. Feel free to link your post in the comments though!

With that out of the way, on to the questions…

Codifying myself in MMOs

The other night while watching Pizza Maid’s stream the topic of how we “codify” our appearance in games came up. It was a pretty good conversation and even prompted her to write a blog post about it which you can find it here. Go ahead and give it a read. I will be waiting until you come back. 🙂

Ok, back already? Like I said, in that conversation I don’t usually have recurring themes when picking character appearances in single-player games except that my first character tends to be male, a melee class and whichever race picks my fancy at the moment of character creation.

The franchises I snubbed and end up in love later

A banner showing the games in this post

A while ago Ravanel made a post about Fandoms that I never though I’d like (bud did)*. It is a pretty interesting post (and topic) and I’ve been meaning to write about it since then. Unfortunately certain things got in the way so I am only writing about it now.

Anyhoo, unlike Ravanel I can’t say I always had an open mind. Sure, if you asked teenage me I would have said that I was the most open and accepting people in the world. But the truth is there was a lot of things I snubbed down or outrighted hated because it didn’t conform to what I felt was the way the world and myself “should be”. Nowadays I try to police myself better to not fall into those kind of traps and to actually have an open mind. But it is a constant battle for that, one that I do not always win.

So this post is about those franchises I snubbed in the past then through certain circumstances gave it a try and found out that I was wrong, that I actually really like it. Here are my picks, in no specific order:

Why I Write

Recently, Roger Tyranny of the blog Tyrannodorkus wrote a pretty good post about how he got convinced to starting writing a blog of his own. This made me think of the reasons I write a blog myself. After some thinking I decided to write it down. Maybe someone might relate to it and start a blog of their own too. Maybe it might just be an interesting reading to someone else. Or maybe I will just be amusing myself. Any of these options work for me.

So why do I write a blog about video-games for no pay, no fame, no reward at all? Short answer to scratch an itch to write.

The longer answer is pretty much the same as the short answer but with my usual wall of text. :p

Why I don’t like voice chat

Recently Ravanel wrote on her blog about her experiences as a guest in a Star Wars the Old Republic stream. In there she pretty much explains why she prefers to blog rather than stream. Part of the reason being how exhaustive it is  for her to use voice chat for hours. (Do go read her post, she explains it much better than I could in a paragraph).

I did end up commenting on her post with my reasons for disliking voice chat. Once it was finished I realized it was big enough to make a blog post and so with Ravanel’s blessings I decided to put it here too, with some editing and additions.

Now, just to be completely clear, I am not claiming that these are the reasons for everybody who hates voice chat. These are mine. Other people have their own reasons for that feeling. I also have nothing against anyone who likes to use voice chat. To each their own, as I always say.

With all that out of the way, here are the reasons I tend to avoid voice chat in games:
