In defense of story as told by Final Fantasy XIV

I was trying to resist saying anything about this topic besides some comments here and there because I feel this is one of those complicated discussions that might not have right answers. Not to mention people have some strong opinions on it.

So, it all began with Aywren defending the importance of story in MMORPGs by using Final Fantasy XIV as an example. Then later on Naithin, as he was returning to Final Fantasy XIV, mused if Final Fantasy XIV has to be a MMO to deliver its story. Then there is Bhagpuss, who hasn’t made a post on the topic yet, asking in a comment in one of Naithin’s posts, if the way that Final Fantasy XIV tells it’s story wouldn’t be best done in a more traditional format like a movie or a book.

I will try to address both Naithin’s and Baghpuss’ positions and give my opinion on the subject.

EDIT: Bhagpuss did write a post on the subject of stories in MMORPGs. It isn’t aimed at any MMORPG in particular, just his instance about linear stories in MMORPGs in general. You can read it here.

Farewell Final Fantasy XIV (For now)

A while ago I mentioned I was going to end my subscription to Final Fantasy XIV. Not because I am tired of the game or anything like that. It is just that because the economy here is so terrible right now that I have to be more stingy on what I spend my money on. Specially if it is something in dollars, which is the case with this game.

I should have done that a long time ago but I thought I could finish the Shadowbringers patches to see how that storyline ended. The problem was that I couldn’t do the content from those patches right away because it required a higher iLevel than what I had.

Still I thought I could grind enough crafting levels and dungeons to get the new gear that would give me the required iLevel.

Unfortunately I never got the patience for that grind. Yes, I know that getting crafting and gathering levels are stupidly easy right now. So much that it is barely a grind anymore. But it is still a grind, even if a minor one.

And I have no idea when I will get the patience for it, even more so when I am pretty much hooked into Minecraft. So it doesn’t make sense for me to keep paying subscription for a game I am not playing.

I eventually want to get back into Final Fantasy XIV and see how the story continues though. Shadowbringer’s story was one of the best in the entire Final Fantasy franchise which makes me want to see what comes next. It will just have to wait until I am in the right mindset for it (and hopefully the economy is better too).

[FFXIV] Ding! All crafters and gatherers level 60+!

This weekend Ultros, the server I play in, finally completed the last phase of the Ishgard Restoration. Now we just need to wait until they release the next parts of this event.

Even with this part completed we can still craft the event items and do turn ins for some crazy amounts of XP. In fact that is pretty much what I did this entire weekend!

[FFXIV] Patch 5.1 Crafting and Gathering Changes and the Ishgard Restoration impressions

My original plan was to write a first impressions of patch 5.1, even if late, since I just got back to Final Fantasy XIV after about a month away from it.

But I barely touched the story much less anything else that came with the patch. With the Ishgard Restoration going on I will probably be spending my FFXIV time participating on it and who knows when I will be able to go back to anything else in the game.

So I decided it might be wiser instead to just write about it while the iron is still hot, so to speak. Specially since this experience is also providing me with some insight on the crafting and gathering changes that came with patch 5.1

[FFIXV] Playing around with GShade

This is post #7 for Blaugust 2019

If you follow some people who play Final Fantasy XIV on Twitter you might have seem some amazing screenshots accompanied with the tags of #Reshade or #GShade.

If you are wondering what they are, it is basically like this: Reshade is a program that applies some post-processing effects to whatever appears in your screen and as far as I know it is used only with games. You can find some presets for different games here.

GShade is a modified version of Reshade made by a group of Final Fantasy XIV  screenshot aficionados called GPosers. Besides some technical changes that I honestly don’t understand, GShade also comes packaged with a bunch of community presets for use with Final Fantasy XIV. They don’t have an official site (that I know of) but you can find the latest version of it by following their twitter account or joining their Discord server.

[FFXIV] Moonfire Faire 2019

Originally I wasn’t going to write about this year’s Moonfire Faire since it isn’t all that different from last year. The only differences are the rewards and a slightly different storyline.

Don’t take me wrong. I am not dissing the event or unhappy with it. To me this means the developers are busy with some big content for us so they couldn’t spend much time with this year’s Moonfire Faire. It also makes my life easier since I had 3 characters to go through it. XD

Anyway the reason I am doing a recap for it is because I wrote about it last year and it seems these characters will be reoccurring. So in case the event changes next year but with the same characters it will be a lot less confusing if I have it written it down in the blog and I can refresh my memory about it.

Alright, with all that disclaimer out of the way let’s see what the story is this time.

P.S.: I have no idea why I always end up doing these events during the in-game evenings. It really makes the screenshots look off when it is about a summer event. Sorry about that!

[FFXIV] Getting back to the routine

Time for a smaller and lighter post, just  for the sake of variety and for what little sanity I have left. XD

So I’ve been slowly recovering from Post-Expansion Syndrome. You know, that feeling of aimlessly once you finish a pretty emotional journey through an expansion’s story.

To achieve that I have been trying to clear off some items from my bucket list.

[FFXIV] Tips for new Final Fantasy XIV players

Lately I’ve seem some people on my Twitter timeline who had just decided to give Final Fantasy XIV a go. I was even asked by a couple of them for advice for newbies. So I figured I might as well write a post with it.

Some of this might be stuff that is pretty obvious to veteran MMO players or just general common sense but I figure I might as well include it here just in case. Also, this is by no means meant to be an exhaustive list of tips. I am sure I probably forgot something or another so if you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments and I will try to answer to the best of my abilities.

This also goes if you are a veteran Final Fantasy XIV player and feel I missed something feel free to also post in the comments letting me know! I will add it in the list and give proper credit. 🙂

With that out of the way let’s get to it!

[FFXIV] Shadowbringers finished!

Last Sunday I finally finished Shadowbringers. What a journey it was! I said this in my “Shadowbringers First Impressions” post and I will say it again, this is the best expansion that Final Fantasy XIV had so far. I am even kinda afraid  that they won’t be able to top this one with the next expansions but if they get close that will be good enough for me. 🙂

Anyway, now that I finished the whole expansion here are some more thoughts about it. Consider it as a kind of addendum to my previous post about the expansion.

Again, I will try to not spoil anything for those who didn’t start playing through it yet. I will also try to not ramble too much. XD

[FFXIV] Ding! Machinist level 70 and 80!

Rakuno as a level 80 mechanist posing in Amh AraengThis post is horribly late. I actually got Machinist to level 70 a few weeks before Shadowbringers released. As I mentioned earlier though I wasn’t in the best of mental states so I didn’t write anything back then. Then I sort of forgot about it, started playing Shadowbringers, finished it and got my Machinist to 80… Oops!

Since Shadowbringers switched to a role-based questline for levels 71 to 80 and Job Quests now consists of only one quest at level 80 I will include that one in my usual recap of the Job Quest story here too.

WARNING: Spoilers about the Machinist questline from level 60 to 70 and the level 80 quest ahead!
